Safe schools for children in disaster-stricken areas MYTILINEOS continues to implement its commitments

Athens, Greece - 10 September 2019 - MYTILINEOS continues to deliver on its commitment to provide support to those affected by the July 2018 fires. As it had already been announced, the Company proceeded with the improvement of energy efficiency and climatic mitigation of the Gymnasium-Lyceum School Complex and the Closed Gym of the Rafina-Pikermi Municipality, with a total value of € 600,000.

The buildings that were upgraded (total area of 6,000 sq.m.) currently cover the educational needs of 700 children and the sports activities of 1,000 children, from various areas of Rafina affected by last year’s fires and surrounding Municipalities.

The EPC Business Unit – METKA of MYTILINEOS, after a series of studies, has selected the most modern interventions for the school complex, in order to ensure maintenance and maximum energy efficiency.

Specifically, the energy efficiency improvements chosen concerned both the outer shell of the buildings (replacement of exterior window frames and gym exterior roof with insulated panels) and their electromechanical systems (heating, cooling, lighting and hot water production). With these actions, the energy savings are expected to reach 45% for the school and 40% for the gym, compared to the existing situation.

At the same time, additional interventions were found necessary to improve safety, functionality, and protection of students and teachers:

  • Fire protection study;

  • Shading systems for the indoor gym and construction of a new steel shed with panel roof for the outdoor stands of the school;

  • Installation of a new lift and other improvements for persons of reduced mobility;

  • Repairs and maintenance of the of the building façade;

  • Installation of a new lightning protection and surge arrester system for both buildings;

  • Maintenance and enrichment of green areas,

  • Reconstruction of perimeter fence and paddock, as well as school roof floor railings.

All operations were completed in time to be ready for the start of the new school year.

The event organized by the Municipality of Rafina - Pikermi for the delivery of the project was attended by the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos, the Deputy Minister under the Prime Minister Akis Skertsos and the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Lefteris Avgenakis. MYTILINEOS was represented by the Head of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee Sophie Daskalaki - Mytilineos, as well as the executives of the EPC Business Unit – METKA.

Additionally, the EPC Business Unit – METKA of MYTILINEOS, cooperated with other private companies in the removal of hazardous materials in a plot in Mati.

Finally, MYTILINEOS donated 6 autonomous fire trucks to the Fire Department Headquarters.

The company is committed to offer to society, as an integral part of its strategy, as reflected in its values, within its Corporate Social Responsibility.
