Homellon – Reintegration of homeless people in the labor market - A MYTILINEOS initiative

Athens, Greece – June 25, 2020 - The reintegration of homeless people in the labor market and by extension in the social fabric is a difficult situation; the higher the number of our fellow citizens is being forced to live in the streets, the harder it is to solve the problem. According to data, out of the total number of homeless people currently in the country, 65% are neo-homeless.

In particular:

• 62% are Greeks,
• 82% are men
• 18% are women and
• 57% are at the age of 35-55 years.

The percentages are particularly unsettling and a direct and holistic approach is required to deal with the phenomenon.

This MYTILINEOS’ initiative, in cooperation with the Social Entrepreneurship knowl on lifelong learning, aimed at direct and substantial support to homeless people, neo-homeless and people living under precarious housing conditions or in places unsuitable for residence. This initiative intended to help homeless people acquire the necessary professional skills and tools to claim a job with the appropriate qualifications and to build a sustainable future for themselves and their families.

Through an open participative process between bodies and specialized social workers and work consultants, a first group of 30 beneficiaries has already been set up to participate in the pilot program in cooperation with UNESCO Piraeus and Islands, the Doctors of the World Greece, the Organization of Social Protection & Solidarity of Vrilissia Municipality, the Community Center of Herakleion Municipality in Attica, the Social Care Division of Agioi Anargyroi Municipality-Kamatero and Emphasis Foundation.

On Friday, June 26, 2020, beneficiaries, rapporteurs and implementing bodies from 3 different structures in Attica region will join in electronically to launch the kick-off meeting of the #HoMellon innovative program. It will be an intensive course, absolutely tailored-made to each beneficiary’s individual profile, needs and professional skills.

In particular, the program offers 50 hours of training and counseling in soft, hard and digital skills, capitalizing on each person’s dynamic, customized Road Map and the person's strengths. The program also offers guidance in preparing curriculum vitae with the corresponding letters of reference, interviews simulation with experienced HR executives of the market and a direct link to the labor market.

The Accelerator of Skills and Employability of the Social Enterprise knowl constitutes a platform ensuring and implementing a holistic and individualized training program, ‘built’ on each participant's strengths; it is embedded in MYTILINEOS Corporate Social Responsibility actions put in place to support the Sustainable Development Goals for Zero Poverty (1), Decent work & Economic Growth (8) and Reduction of inequalities (10).
